One worksheet, start to finish

A photograph goes in. Ten questions come out with a verdict on each, and — this is the part worth looking at — a plain statement of which ones were proved and which were only read.

This worksheet is made up. No child's work appears on this page and none ever will. What is real is everything below the photograph: the table is produced by the same code that grades a live paper, running now, on this request. Nothing in it is typed by hand.

The photograph

One page, taken on a phone, no names typed and no assignment chosen. This is the whole of what a teacher does.

A photographed arithmetic worksheet with ten handwritten answers

What came back

9 of 10 answers were recomputed independently and agreed. 1 could be read clearly but not checked by arithmetic. That is the number that matters, and it is the number this page was told by the grader rather than by a copywriter.

Why one of them is not proved

½ of 8 = — this is not plain arithmetic, so there is nothing to recompute. The answer is shown, and it is flagged as read rather than proved. Class Margin would rather tell you it does not know than round the number up.

That distinction is the whole product. A tool that reported 10 of 10 here would be claiming something it cannot support, and you would have no way to tell which claim was the hollow one.

What a teacher does next

  1. Reads the flagged onesThe proved rows do not need proof-reading. On this page that is 9 of 10 questions nobody has to check.
  2. Changes anything that looks wrongEvery score is a draft with its reasoning attached, and the photograph sits beside it.
  3. Marks the paper finalOnly a person does that. There is no setting that lets a model finish a grade.
